Bethlehem Remembered

Welcome to Gillis Hill Farm!

Thank you for visiting our web site! We would like to welcome you to our farm.  We are a real, working family farm located in Fayetteville, NC.  The Gillis Family has been farming here since the 1700s.

When you come visit us on the farm we will share with you some of our family history. We will also share with you some of the progression of power equipment and its effect on the family business.  From the first water powered sawmills and gristmills of Malcolm Gillis and his son David to the steam powered sawmill and cotton gins of W.J. Gillis.  We will show you the move from horse and mule power to diesel powered tractors in the fields and sawmills of William McNatt Gillis, then on to the use of electricity to power the tobacco drying barns, greenhouses, and workshop of the present day farm.

With every new invention, the country and this farm were able to persevere and grow.

We will share with you a little about certain crops such as tobacco, cotton, soybeans, and corn. We will share with you a little about what it was like to live before electricity which did not come here to the farm until 1941.  We will share with you a little about what it was like when families grew or fashioned from the land most of what they needed for daily survival.

We look forward to sharing these things and more with you and hope you will enjoy your visit and that it will be a time of interest and a learning experience.  Please browse our web site and we look forward to meeting you when you visit our farm!

Thanks,

John D. Gillis II
